July 15, 2018. At one of the Highlands Photo Club meetings, co-chair Joan Bruno suggested a personal photo shoot for those interested in the Battery Lewis Restoration in Hartshorne Woods Park.
I took the Portland road entrance, next to the Henry Hudson Regional High School. After parking it was a very short walk to the entrance of Battery Lewis.
The restoration was completed in May 2018.
At the end of this reinforced steel and concrete corridor was one of the big guns. Doors, sticking out on the right side of this corridor led to storage rooms for projectiles and power.
Inside one of the storage rooms, were replicas of the 2100 pound, 16 inch diameter armor-piercing projectiles.
Today, the several storage areas for projectiles and powder rooms have been converted into a significant, detailed, pictorial history.
The original gun was scrapped after WWII. The gun displayed here was a replacement gun from the Battleship NJ (now birthed in Camden NJ). It's hard to believe that a 2100 pound projectile could be fired over 21 miles from this gun. It protected New York harbor from as far east as Long Beach, NY and as far south as Point Pleasant, NJ.
The far end of the 60 foot gun was covered and I didn't bring a camera flash with me so the rifle groves inside the barrel could not be discerned.
I violated a rule by bringing my pet (Paddy).
It was a very educational visit. Thanks Joan for the suggestion.
