July 17, 2018. This was a special Highlands NJ Photo Club shoot. My GPS had a problem, so I arrived 20 minutes late. Despite the late arrival, I was still able to meet all the club members that showed up for the shoot.
Welcome sign at the main entrance on Sculptures Way.
A short drive arriving at the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts building.
This is the entrance to the Welcome Center where tickets are purchased.
Temperature in the 90's with high humidity, it was refreshing to enter the air conditioned Info Center.
After purchasing my senior admission ticket ($15) I walked a few steps inside the building to the Cecelia Joyce and Seward Johnson Gallery. A history of Mr. Johnson and examples of his work were on display.
At the rear exit from the Info Center were several additional sculptures.
At the Info Desk, I was told that a walking tour or a motorized tour was available. Because of the 90+ degree heat and the high humidity, I chose the motorized tour. In addition to the tour guide, the vehicle could hold 5 passengers. Our tour guide Anne, was very knowledgeable about the grounds and was able to answer every question posed by her passengers.
Tour guide Anne would stop briefly at each exhibit so we could take photos. The tour was between 45 minutes and an hour in length.
At this sculpture, a live workman above the ladder was making a repair, below in the white hair was a live newspaper photographer capturing the event.
This display was carved out of dead trees and preserved.
Perfect timing: just as my tour was completed, I received a cell phone call from one of the Highlands Club members inviting me to the Peacock Cafe, which was in the Domestic Arts Building, a short walk from the Info Center.
After a snack and good conversation, I headed back home. The vision and talent of Seward Johnson was most amazing and the day was splendid.
