April 13, 2019. In the early 20's this Belle Mead, NJ railroad station handled many Steam Engine passenger trains along the NJ Transit West Trenton line. In 1982 passenger trains were no more and the station closed. Abandoned for 37 years, the station and its 2nd building took its toll with vandals and the ravages of time.
The Belle Mead station.
Sealed tight, the only opening was a small window-less access that having seen the inside, I didn't want to climb over and enter.
For the half hour I spent in the area, these birds were happy to sit atop the station the whole time.
Across the tracks was a smaller building which was a waiting room for North bound passengers.
The rear of the building showed the ravages of time, the destruction by vandals and the usual graffiti artists.
In many places, old, abandoned railroad stations are restored for history or converted into restaurants, but there are no plans for this Belle Mead station. Two possible reasons: the high cost of restoration and the additional cost of a high barrier to separate the public from an active, working freight train line.
